adidas Group Environmental Management awarded with ISO 14001 certificate

Herzogenaurach, 12 July, 2011 - Today Herbert Hainer, CEO of the adidas Group, received the ISO 14001 certificate issued by TÜV Rheinland for the environmental management system of the central functions at the adidas Group’s headquarters and its five North American locations Canton, Carlsbad, Montreal, Portland and Spartanburg.

As part of its Environmental Strategy presented in spring 2011, the adidas Group aims at improving the environmental impact of the company’s own sites. The environmental management system implemented during the certification process therefore enables the audited adidas Group locations to identify, monitor and control environmentally relevant aspects such as energy use, waste management and water consumption.

“The certification process is a major milestone within the adidas Group’s Environmental Strategy. We were able to implement all ISO requirements within just one year, which makes us very proud and shows the impressive commitment of everyone involved,” says Karin Ekberg, Head of Environmental Services at the adidas Group.

ISO 14001 is an international standard of requirements for environmental management systems for companies and organizations released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). TÜV Rheinland, the certification agency for the system, audited all locations within a one-year process including an analysis of the starting situation and the implementation of required amendments.

The North American sites are now operating within a joint system linked to the central functions at the Group’s headquarters. The focus is now on the certification process for the Group’s HQ site in Herzogenaurach. Further locations will follow successively within the extensive initiative.

The adidas Group has been working towards more sustainable business practices for more than a decade and presented its Environmental Strategy earlier this year. The five-year plan aims at reengineering the company’s approach to environmental management. Besides optimizing the environmental impact of the company’s own sites, it targets significant improvements along the entire value chain of adidas Group products. Further aspects of the company’s sustainability work include improving working conditions in supplier factories, caring for the welfare and development of the company’s employees and making a positive difference to communities the Group operates in.
